It was a race that had been hyped for weeks, with several fathers taking it far more seriously than perhaps necessary. Barry James, known to the community as BJ, had approached the event as if it were an Olympic final.  Clad in full professional running gear- spikes, compression top, and moisture-wicking shorts- he had arrived early and spent much of the morning stretching and running sprints along the sidelines.  His platinum blonde hair and deep tan shimmered in the midday sun as he eyed his competition with the quiet confidence of a man who had already written his victory speech.

Not to be outdone, Ivan Moorhouse was eager to prove that speed ran in the family.  His son, Dale, had earlier in the day smashed every school sprint record, while his daughter, Carmen, had done the same in the girls’ events, dominating the track and rewriting the record books.  With both his children showcasing blistering pace, Ivan saw it as his responsibility to uphold the family legacy, determined to cement their reputation as the fastest sporting family in Knobble Hill history.

On the other end of the field stood Pastor Rob Bircher, looking as though he had stumbled into the race by accident.  Barefoot and dressed in long trousers and flowing priest’s robes, he looked more suited for a Sunday sermon than a sprint race.  If there was anyone less prepared for a 100-meter dash, no one could find him.

Knobble Hill’s principal, Bryan Blumrick, took up his position at the finish line, smiling as he surveyed the eager competitors.  Terry Dunstan-Smith and Brian Anderson, two longtime Knobble Hill dads who had wisely opted out of the race due to bad backs, stood nearby, chuckling at the dramatic contrast between the competitors.

“I think BJ might actually break the school record today,” Dunstan-Smith remarked, watching James do one last set of lunges.  Anderson nodded in agreement.  “And I think Pastor Bircher might break his dog collar.”

As the runners took their marks, a hush fell over the crowd.  The whistle blew, and BJ exploded off the line, his legs pumping furiously as he surged ahead.  Moorhouse kept pace, his arms flailing in sheer determination.  The crowd roared as the two fathers pulled away- until, inexplicably, they didn’t.

From seemingly nowhere, Pastor Bircher glided past them both, his bare feet barely making a sound on the track.  He moved effortlessly, his robes sailing behind him like Superman’s cape, his expression unchanged, as if he were simply strolling to the pulpit.

By the halfway mark, BJ had begun to realise that something was terribly wrong.  His well-planned technique and expensive racing spikes seemed entirely useless against a man who had entered the race dressed for a funeral.  As Bircher lengthened his stride, Barry pushed harder, his carefully quiffed hair now collapsing under the weight of sweat and desperation.

Meanwhile, Ivan was fighting his own battle, arms flailing, lungs burning, wondering how his son had made sprinting look so easy.  But no amount of effort could change what was happening on the track—Pastor Bircher was floating towards the finish line, untouched, unchallenged, and utterly unbothered.

BJ, refusing to be beaten without a fight, launched himself forward in a desperate dive, as he crashed onto the finish line.  It was glorious, dramatic, and entirely unnecessary, as Bircher had already crossed the line ten yards ahead of him.

Still catching his breath, Ivan Moorhouse groaned from his knees.  “Must be divine intervention!”

The crowd erupted into cheers, while the other fathers gasped for breath behind him.  BJ lay sprawled on the track, staring up at the sky. “How did he do that?” he panted.

Pastor Bircher, looking completely unbothered, dusted off his trousers, and turned to the crowd with a gentle smile.

“Sometimes,” he said with a wink, “you just have to have a little faith.”

Knobble Hill Primary’s Principal Blumrick could barely contain his laughter as he clapped from the finish line. Terry Dunstan-Smith and Brian Anderson, watching from the sidelines, shook their heads in disbelief.

With that, the victorious Pastor Bircher strolled off towards the snack tent, leaving behind a field of stunned fathers, an exhausted BJ, and a race that would be talked about at Knobble Hill for years to come.

Newly appointed events manager Jo Cooper, keen to bring live entertainment to The Mist, had booked her friends Les McQueen and Tony Cludeo, a duo who went by the name Crème Brûlée.  Everything was going well until Jon Bosman, a local pub enthusiast and connoisseur of bad decisions, decided that it would be a good idea to pinch the backside of a 15-year-old girl who was playing pool.

Unfortunately for him, the girl in question was the daughter of lead-singer McQueen and within seconds, the evening’s setlist changed from soft rock to kung fu fighting.  The furious musician confronted Bosman, leading to a heated exchange that might have ended there- if not for Chef Stuart Scott-King, a man known more for his right hook than his culinary skills.  Scott-King decided to deck the band member, knocking the glasses clean off his face.

“Everybody stop fighting! I hate this!”

This prompted Cludeo, the larger of the two musicians- a man built like a walk-in freezer, to intervene. The fight spilled onto the outside deck, where the monster musician shoved the chef to the ground with a force that rattled the pub windows.

Witnessing his chef sprawled out on the pavement, pub manager Nick Dunstan-Smith decided it was his time to shine.  With the fearlessness of a man who had clearly overestimated his own strength, he leapt onto the back of the enormous drummer in an ambitious but ultimately doomed attempt to strangle him. The band member, unfazed, simply flipped Nick off his back, sending him crashing down like a bag of mielie meal.

Seeing Dunstan-Smith on the ground, Chaz, the 14-year-old son of the Cludeo, decided to get stuck in as well.  In a move straight out of a 16th century shin-kicking contest, he laid into the back of Dunstan-Smith as many times as possible before being dragged off by the manager’s girlfriend Tosca Perissinotto.

It was at this moment that Mist & Drizzle regular and Knobble Hill News’ own sub-editor Matthew le Cordeur could take no more.  Jumping onto an outdoor table, he flung his arms into the air and shrieked, “Everybody stop fighting! I hate this!” in what witnesses later described as the most dramatic display of pacifism since the 1960s.

The unexpected theatrics worked.

The enormous band member, suddenly overcome with regret, began apologizing profusely, particularly to Dunstan-Smith, begging him not to call the police.  He stated that he was already on parole for previous assault charges and could ill afford another misdemeanor.

Meanwhile, Chef Scott-King, who had very clearly thrown the first punch, attempted to deny any involvement.  Despite multiple eyewitnesses and the fact that he was still wearing his chef’s jacket, making him the easiest suspect to identify in the entire ordeal.

When things calmed down and the bar staff had cleaned up the broken glass, Jo Cooper announced that the night, despite the small scuffle, had been a huge success.

The Mist & Drizzle patrons agreed that it had been the most entertaining night in Knobble Hill that year.

Early Fireworks from Powell Snr

The Father-Son match is a beloved tradition, typically played in the spirit of fun.  However, Mr Powell had other ideas.  When the Sons came out to bat, 12 year-old James Powell walked out to open the batting.

On seeing his son taking middle, Mr Powell ran to the wicket and snatched the ball from Brian Anderson, who was warming up to bowl the first over.  Mr Powell then marked out a 30-yard long runup, ignoring the friendly two-step approach that most of the Dads embraced.

Powell charged in to bowl, like a man possessed.  His first ball, a vicious, head-high bouncer, sent his son James scrambling for cover, missing his unprotected head by inches.  The next delivery, a perfectly executed yorker, sent middle stump flying out the ground, and James trudging back to the pavilion for a duck.  Reducing the Sons to none for one wicket within minutes.

Young Justin Anderson, came in at number three hoping for an easier time at the crease, soon realized he was also in Powell Snr’s firing line. A sharp in-swinging delivery trapped him plumb LBW, sending him back to the pavilion shaking his head.

By the time Powell had finished his first over, the Sons had lost three wickets and failed to score a single run.

The Father’s team Captain, Principal Bryan Blumrick, fearing a complete rout and his owns son Ray’s safety, insisted that the other Dad’s complete the remainder of the overs.

With tamer bowling from the rest of the Father’s veteran attack, the Son’s recovered to score a spirited 145, setting up an exciting chase.  Joshua Paulo, who’s father sadly passed away a few years ago, top-scored with 62, capitalizing on his Mom’s underarm full tosses.

Lunch and Drinks

The lunch time break proved a festive affair.  Class Mom Jan Airton made a meatloaf, dry and hard as a brick, that would have been inedible had drinks not been sponsored by Knobble Hill Hotel owner Terry Dunstan-Smith.  The Dad’s got stuck into the free beers like men getting stuck into free beers.   By the time their innings came, the Fathers were three sheets to the wind and rocking from side to side.

Powell Snr Takes Charge with the Bat

The Dads’ reply started shakily, with Mr Moorhouse misjudging a full toss and finding himself caught for a golden duck, much to the delight of his son Dale.  The youngsters bowled and fielded exuberantly while the Dad’s looked in a complete shambles as wickets tumbled at both ends.

With the Father’s innings in tatters at 43/7, a sober Hugh Powell strode to the crease.

Facing his son James, Powell Snr launched a relentless assault, sending the ball soaring into neighboring gardens, the school car park, and even onto the roof of the science block.  He struck six consecutive sixes in one over, leaving the Sons’ fielders chasing shadows and James questioning his life choices.

A Controversial Finish

Powell’s rampage continued, with every shot bigger than the last, until, with the Dads just nine runs from victory, he launched one final monstrous six off James, sending the ball sailing deep into the forest behind the school.

A tense silence fell over the pitch.

With no replacement ball, Mr Blumrick declared the match a draw, despite the Fathers needing just three runs with heaps of time left. The Sons, having escaped certain defeat, celebrated wildly hugging and high-fiving.

Powell, however, would not hear of it.

Holding his bat aloft like a conquering hero, he turned towards the pavilion, where the moms had gathered to watch the spectacle, and celebrated as though he had just won the Ashes.

“The game is over!” he declared triumphantly. “The Dads are victorious!”

Temple, a session musician who played with Les McQeen in Creme Brulee during the 1980’s, spoke to KHN outlining the plan.

“Rules include no heavy metal, no freedom songs and strictly no “Work” by Rihanna”

“The problem is not busking but quality of busker’s. We are looking for more refined Muso’s. Fewer dreadful two-bob Marley impersonators and more Coltrane if you please,” said Stan Temple, music teacher at Knobble Hill Grammar School.

The five point-plan is as follows

1. Temporarily ban all busking.

2. Would-be entertainers must apply to the town council for busking licenses.

3. Licenses issued free of charge however all buskers must go through an audition before receiving a license.

4. Strict rules must be followed to retain license

Rules: No Christmas Carol’s outside of December. No freedom songs (read Bob Marley); No heavy metal; Adhere to the designated no-busking zones; Strictly no “Work” by Rihanna.

5. Residents may report any breach to the council.
